Rep. Athena Salman

Rep. Athena Salman

Arizona State Representative Athena Salman is born and raised in Arizona to an immigrant family from Mexico, Germany, and Palestine. Her early gratitude for the rights we often take for granted inspires her defense of those who are most vulnerable, including forcing prisons to supply feminine hygiene products to incarcerated women by sparking national outrage; unapologetically standing with educators during #RedForEd, having herself benefited from a public education; and now fighting for the health, safety, and lives of frontline workers and our communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rep. Salman is currently the Democratic ranking member on the Arizona House Government & Elections Committee and former Democratic Whip. She is the only openly atheist woman in the Arizona legislature.

Chrissy Stroop

Chrissy Stroop

The co-editor of the essay anthology Empty the Pews: Stories of Leaving the Church, Chrissy Stroop grew up attending evangelical Christian schools that indoctrinated her in "alternative facts" and mobilized her for the culture wars. Improbably, Stroop went on to receive a Ph.D. in modern Russian history. She is now an outspoken ex-evangelical writer and advocate, and is fiercely critical of conservative evangelical subculture.

Dusty went on to create the Secular Family Social Club, which she uses as a platform to promote secular family community and assist other secular parents in developing their own local family groups. By combining her passion for secular community and social justice, she hopes to guide people toward a goal of increasing acceptance and inclusivity both within and on behalf of the atheist community. Dusty currently serves as organizer for Little Heathens of RVA.

Gayle Jordan

Gayle Jordan

Gayle is a former Southern Baptist who left the faith 14 years ago when her then-teenagers began asking questions she could not answer. Her research led her (and her children) into the light of reason and rationality. Years later, she still feels the effects of that dramatic shift in perspective and attitude. It is this sympathy and compassion that drives her to reach out to help others navigate the emotional and physical process involved in leaving one's faith.

She is the Executive Director of Recovering from Religion, and the co-founder of NaNoCon and Murfreesboro Freethinkers. She ran for state senate in rural Tennessee in 2016 and 2018 as an open atheist, and faced a profoundly unconstitutional attack on religious liberty.

Gayle is an attorney and former personal trainer. She is currently enjoying life in the Pacific Northwest close to her children. She blogs about life, endurance event training, and secularism at Happy. Healthy. Heathen.
