Alex is a former fundamentalist Southern Baptist who found his way out of faith after being felt called to ministry while working in the Gulf of Mexico as a merchant mariner. His investigations into belief and the theology of it led him to upend all beliefs about the supernatural, faith, ethics, and morality.

The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix (HSGP) advocates for humanist values in the greater Phoenix area. They are primarily a social group, focused on social justice issues, ethical and moral development, and community activism. HSGP’s YouTube channel highlights some of the various topics and diverse activities the group engages in.

Alex previously served as the Vice President of the Carolinas Secular Association, an umbrella group for local organizations in North Carolina and South Carolina, from 2011–2012. Alex was also the President of Piedmont Humanists in Greenville, SC from 2012–2013.
